My wife, sister, brother-in-law and I have just spent two nights at the Leyland Arms whilst visiting Llanelidan which an ancestor owned and lost, allegedly in a gambling debt. We had a fantastic time. We were made to feeel at home not just by Steve but also by the regulars in the bar. The rooms were comfortable, the setting idyllic and the food delicious. Steve's bread and butter pudding is the best I have ever eaten. We shall return!

If you live in Australia, or the wilds of Patagonia, driving a few hours to get to the pub isn’t a major thing. However, I am British and our little island shrinks our sense of perspective somewhat, so I reckon a four hour drive for a pint is a fairly Big Deal. And our antipodean brethren may have braved all of nature’s toothy/venomy arsenal on their drive, but they never had to contend with the M62 on a Friday night: a rain-lashed corridor of misery slouching across the Pennines, choked with despairing commuters and buffeted by winds. (At one point the traffic stood still for so long the girls in the car next to us started getting changed for their night out. This certainly helped pass the time.)
Anyway, the point of this slog, plus the tearing down rattling dark country roads into the Northern corners of Wales, was to get to the Leyland Arms in Llanelidan. It was worth it to see our friends in the village, but also because this, friends, is a Proper Pub. There are locals who have their designated seats. Real beers made not very far away. In the summer, there are wedding receptions and fetes here. In the winter they host their own nativity complete with ‘no room at the inn’ cameos from Steve the landlord. And when Steve is busy in the kitchen, you hop on the pumps and get pouring if there are people waiting. Chuck in a real fire, sturdy stone walls and a howling gale outside and you have all the ingredients for a splendid night in – when it’s the kind of weather that makes people burst through doors with theatrical head shakes, you know that this is the right place to be.
And! They do food. Not gastro food, and not despairingly microwaved food. Proper food. Like, hot chicken and mushroom tarts made at home and pimped with fiesty chillies, served next to a heap of sandwiches. Steve shouts ‘go’ and all present fall on them like wolves (although that could have just been me and my Actor, his companion in carnivorous raptures). Then, when it’s time for the taxi into the furthest pools of inky black night and the farmhouse where our pals live, you simply trot out with your half finished pints and bring the glasses back in the morning.
No fuss, no nonsense. Just a proper pub, done properly. All hail the Leyland.

Haggis, neeps and tatties; piping hot; plentiful and served with a smile on a cold winter's Burns night . A taste of Scotland provided with Greek hospitality; amid the beautiful Welsh Landscape typifies what this tradional inn has to offer; a splendid evening of excellent food; warm , friendly company and an ambience of wellbeing and bonhomie.

Steve, Thank you very much for sheltering us from temperatures of minus 10 whilst we waited for the RAC to start our car. The Leyland Arms is the perfect place to be stranded. The hospitality and friendliness of everyone was very welcome and appreciated. See you again soon.

This beautiful unspoilt Welsh village boasts a perfect cricket pitch with Datche style pavillion with clock. These are situated by an historic church, and the Leyland Arms. We stayed here (and will again) on Sept. 1 and 2. A large bedroom, colour co-ordinated, with three piece suite, and en-suite spacious bathroom with power shower. And complete silence. The boss, Steve, is a warm hearted kind host, who provides good pub food, most of which he prepares himself, in a stylish dining room, and in farmer's portions. The locals accept strangers with humour. Two cask beers were on offer. Lovely garde and courtyard. We thought such wonderful places had ceased to exist. If we were to make any critical comment, it would be that the wine prices are a too high.

What a fantastic traditional country pub. Everything from the welcome to the food and beer was obviously served with a true passion for the product reaching me in the way that it was meant to be served. Thanks for your hospitality, food and service.

Superlative fischcakes with a subtle hint of ginger, vegetables cooked to perfection; served in an attractive bar; by friendly, unobtrusive staff, in a location to die for. This pub has it all!

I stayed over last Friday night & was back again for a drink with a friend on the Saturday. Just wanted to say: Steve - thanks for a fantastic welcome from real people (not customer-service clones). Yes, the location is idyllic, but there's more to the Leyland than just the scenery & peace & quiet: it's an amazingly friendly place & obviously the hub of the local community. I couldn't believe how friendly & easy-going you & your staff were. Nothing was too much trouble & I had great mini-break from the stresses of work thanks to you & your team. Sorry I couldn't finish the breakfast - no reflection on the superb cooking; it's just that when you said "generous portions", you meant it! So thanks & please pass on the same to kate & the other lasses. I'll definitely be recommending the Leyland Arms to friends who, like me, appreciate proper hospitality which, sadly, is becoming increasingly rare. All success to you: you deserve it. p.s. particularly liked the use of local suppliers & produce: it shows in the "finished product"! Best Paul
